Maker Spotlight: Camila Albuquerque

Camila Illustrates is primarily an illustration company where Camila creates handmade/ manufactured products based on her illustrations. Her art is meant to be joyful and whimsical but also to celebrate our province, animals, and environment.

How do you take your coffee (or tea!)?

I always take my coffee with skim milk and sweetener. I drink a lot of coffee :D

What’s your favourite scent?

I love Lavender and Patchouli scents.

What inspires you to create?

The environment I’m surrounded by, the season, animals, cartoons, books, and the little things that bring me joy.

How did you get started as a Maker?

I started as a maker in 2008, creating little felt animals. I became obsessed with designing, crafting, and sewing little creatures and toy art. I still am.

What has your most exciting experience as a Maker been so far?

Whenever someone shares an image or sends me a message saying they liked my products, for me, it’s the high point of being a maker. Knowing that my creations brought someone a little joy makes my heart so happy.

What are some of the challenges you’ve overcome with your business?

I think moving to a new country is always challenging from a business perspective. I came from Brazil a few years ago, and not knowing anyone and having no connections whatsoever was difficult. You must research everything, make new connections from scratch, and hope for the best.

What is one piece of advice would you give to new makers?

Just create, focus on what makes you happy, and keep going, even if no one seems to care or like your products. If they think your stuff is not the coolest thing in the world, that’s on them for having bad taste :)
