Maker Spotlight: Ashley and Robert Frohlich

Cedar and Cement is run by the Ashley, Robert, and their dog Fred, aka the quality assurance officer. Robert is the maker and Ashley is everything in between. They make concrete goods such as plant stands, paper towel holders, concrete trays, decorative Manitoba stones + so much more.

How do you take your coffee (or tea!)?

We’re both coffee lovers and enjoy it with a splash of milk!

What’s your favourite scent?

Ashley is as basic as it gets so any fall scent, especially pumpkin. Robert loves the smell of coffee.

What inspires you to create?

Our cozy old home. We constantly look around our home + in our everyday lives and think to ourselves “how can concrete make this better?”

How did you get started as a Maker?

It all started in the middle of the pandemic in the basement of our little old home. Ashley, being a nurse, was working at the hospital day and night. Robert, not a nurse, found himself bored at home quite often. Robert decided to start making some concrete decor & Ashley posted it to her social media. People loved it and that’s when it spiralled. Our house was suddenly filled with concrete and people coming to our door to pick some up for their own space.

What has your most exciting experience as a Maker been so far?

Honestly so much. But to name a couple – seeing our product in local shops & being at local markets which we’ve attended since we were young never gets old. It’s such a surreal experience when somebody says “I’ve seen your stuff at this shop!”

What are some of the challenges you’ve overcome with your business?

I’m sure most other makers can relate but inflation has been an ongoing issue. Unfortunately the prices of our materials have increased and therefore have caused us to increase the prices on some of our items. But for the most part, it’s been received well and people continue to support local. To whoever’s reading this, even though we’ve been doing this for 3 years now, we still celebrate every sale like it’s our first!

What is one piece of advice would you give to new makers?

If you have an idea, just go for it.
